The Palazzo Pio, on the Via della Conciliazione was built by decision of Pope Pius XII to accommodate  pilgrims for the holy Year of 1950.

The wing facing on to the Via della  Traspontina, then became a clergy hospice known as the

Pensionato Romano.

In September 1983, Pope Paul VI established the Casa Romana del Clero, called the Traspontina, to replace the Pensionato Romano, and entrusted it to Religious Congregation  of the Children and Handmaids of  Merciful Love.

By decree of Pope John Paul II, this was replaced by a Residence called the Domus Roman Sacerdotalis, in order to accommodate clergy belonging to the diplomatic corps of the Holy See or working in the  Roman Curia, as well as  Cardinal, Bishops and priests coming to Rome to  visit  the Pope or to take part in events organized by the Apostolic See.

The purpose of the new Residence is to help ensure that there is a suitable hearth of hospitality, inspired by a true spirit of priestly brotherhood.
